When the hubs and I moved to Texas, I was lucky enough to take on a new role that allowed me to work from home. I definitely had my reservations about working full time from my house but couldn't turn down the flexibility it would offer us. After about nine months in role, I've learned a thing or two about productivity.
Today I am sharing some of my learnings about how to remain productive when working from home. And hey, if you don’t work from home some of these will be good general productivity tips (I promise!). Let’s jump in…
Have a Designated Work Space But...Don't Be Afraid To Change It Up
My number one tip for productivity... work wherever you're feeling most productive. It's helpful to have a designated work space (this will come in to play in tip two) but sometimes that's not the space that is making you feel productive that day! Having a desk or an office is super helpful for separating work from the rest of your life, but if you’re anything like me sometimes you need a change of scenery. I work at my dining room table, at the bar stools in our kitchen, on my couch, or even in the sitting area in our bedroom. Sometimes just changing the scenery around me helps me to get the productive juices flowing again.
(Attempt to) Stick To Your Work Schedule
Whether you’re working for yourself or working for an organization you likely have the opportunity to designate or define the hours during which you will be dedicated to work. Once those hours have been defined, do your best to stick to them. This is literally impossible (in any job) but your family, friends, and/or pets will appreciate you making them just as much of a priority as you do your job.
We are literally addicted to our phones and they can be a massive productivity killer. This one can be really bad for me- especially having a side hustle that is so tied to social media. There are many times where I dig in to a task and without even realizing it I’ll stop and check my phone. On days when it’s bad I’ve resorted to plugging my phone in in another room or even setting a timer to work for an hour and reward myself with 10 minutes of phone time (I’m a child, I know). But I feel so much better about myself once I’ve knocked out my work… Instagram will be waiting when I’m done.
It’s very easy to get caught up in what you’re doing and continue working without taking any breaks. Emails flow right in to meetings which lead right in to knocking out your to do list and before you know it, it’s 3pm and you haven’t eaten yet. Breaks are essential for remaining productive throughout the day. Here are just a few of the things I try to do: (1) Listen to my apple watch when it tells me to stand. (2) Take my dog out in the backyard and toss the ball. (3) Eat lunch- not at my computer!
Occasionally, I will come in to work and not even know where it begin for the day. For me, it can be super helpful to take five to ten minutes to write down a to-do list with what I want to accomplish that day. Doing this also helps me prioritize and make sure I’m getting the most important things done first. Another tip can be to do a “brain dump” at the end of the day or week with all the things you didn’t get a chance to get to so that you can know where to start off when you return.
And a bonus tip for you… Coffee.
Lots and lots of coffee. Personally I love a cute coffee mug in the morning to prep me for a great day ahead. I wasn't able to find my personal favorite mugs from my collection, but Amazon has some super cute mugs if you're looking to add to your own collection.
